Australasia

  • Australasia (also known as Oceania) covers roughly 5.3%of the Earth's land and 1.5% of the Earth's surface.
  • Australasia is also the world's smallest continent - 8112 000km2.
  • Australasia is bordered on the Pacific Ocean, partly on the Indian Ocean to the west and the Southern Ocean at the south.
  • The highest point is Mount Wilhelm (4509m) in Papua New Guinea.
  • The longest river is Darling river measuring 2,739km.
  • Australasia is the flattest continent because most of Australia is a desert.
  • Australasia can be divided into four regions.

Australasia's climate can be separated into six types:

  1. Deciduous Forest - Four different seasons including hot summers and cold,damp winters.In Autumn the trees shed their leaves.
  2. Rainforest - Consistent high temperatures and small amounts of rain.
  3. Savanna - Throughout the year extremely high temperatures and in the Summer only, some rain.
  4. Desert - Small amounts of rain and high temperatures.
  5. Desert Scrub - Warm Summers and cool Winters with more than average rainfall.
